Dame Dinah Fire - In Colour
In homage to the publicity stills and gaudy record covers from Decca and HMV from the 50's and 60's, I figured it was time to unleashing the Diva within - introducing mine: Dame Dinah Fire! Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Montserrat Caballe, and Joan Sutherland all provided much soft-focused, big-haired and big-bosomed inspiration for this queer lad growing up in the hills of Perth in the 70's and 80's, this is my tribute to my operatic leading ladies!
Dame Dinah Fire - B&W Publicity Portrait
- B&W
In homage to the black an white publicity stills of the Great Diva's of the 20th Century, I present my alter ego, Dame Dinah Fire! Previously seen in Carmen and La Boheme, upcoming performances include Brunnhilde, Isolde, and scheduling permitting, her first Tosca, scheduled for late 2010.

O Soave Fanciulla...
Continuing along the lines of my 'portrait of the artist as an operatic heroine' theme, I give you Mimi from Puccini's La Boheme! An homage to those Divas from the 20's through to the 50's, and their beautiful publicity stills in costume.

Ice That Gives You Fire!
"Ice that gives you fire and which your fire freezes still more! Lily-white and dark, if it allows you your freedom it makes you a slave; if it accepts you as slave it makes you a King!"Three questions she asked, your head the price if you could not answer the riddles of the cold, chaste, Princess Turandot.

Ugly Sister No1

In homage to Rossini and his operatic version of the Cinderella fairytale, I present Ugly Sister No1. I have always wanted to do a drag self-portrait and here it is! This was a lot of fun to do and is from my own photography and stock. Reminds me of Ingres' women in a way.

Casta Diva
Inspired by Montserrat Caballe and Maria Callas in Bellini's opera Norma, this is one of my very first forays into the world of painting in photoshop. The Drama Queens

Once upon a time, I used to have a costume making business in Melbourne called Drama Queen. This was the front of my business card. It is still one of my favourite pictures. Mixed media on paper.
Desdemona

A pastel of Desdemona as portrayed by soprano Renata Tebaldi. Based on a photograph which I have always loved.
Lucia di Lammermoor

The tragic heroine who goes a little crazy and stabs her husband on their wedding night. Mixed media on paper.
The Queen of the Night

From Die Zauberflote by Mozart. She has two of the most dazzling arias in opera. Costume design , mixed media on paper.
Madonna and Child

This is an early painting in pastel, completed around 1999. The inspiration for this was those wonderful baroque images of the Madonna and child you see in cathedrals worldwide.
